Head Coach 3rd season

Bio

Joe Epkey enters his first season as the head coach of the women’s tennis program at Indiana University Southeast.  Epkey has been head coach of the men's tennis program since 2013. He is a PTR certified professional who has been working with many local juniors and teams in the area since moving to Sellersburg in 2008. 

Epkey has guided the men's tenins program to two-straight KIAC Championship match appearances and the Grenadiers won the KIAC title in 2014.

Epkey attended Center Grove high school in Greenwood, Indiana where he won the state doubles title in 1999 as a freshman with partner John Stone and also helped lead the Trojans to a team state championship in 2001. 

After high school Epkey spent six months in Brisbane, Australia training with the coach of former world number one Patrick Rafter and coaching young Australian juniors.

Epkey played his first two seasons of college tennis at the University of Southern Indiana where he was First Team All-Conference both years, GLVC Freshman of the Year in 2003 and GLVC Player of the year in 2004. In his sophomore season Epkey won both the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Regional Championships earning himself a spot in the ITA Small College National Championships.  Epkey finished as the Division II National Singles Runner-up and placed fifth in the country with his brother Jarrod in doubles. Epkey was also named the winner of the James O’Hara Sargent Rolex Sportsmanship Award at the Small College Championships.

After a season spent mostly ranked No. 2 in the nation in Division II Epkey transferred to Ball State University in 2006.  As a junior he played No. 2 singles for the cardinals who were ranked as high as 45th in the country and helped lead them to a MAC regular season title. He was ranked as high as 26th in the nation in doubles with partner Matt Baccarani.  In both of his seasons as a Cardinal Epkey was named to the Mid-American Conference first team and the MAC all-tournament team. As a senior he played both singles and doubles in the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships in Tulsa, OK advancing into the qualifying rounds.  Epkey played number one singles and doubles for the cardinals in his final year and was named MAC Player of the Year as well as MAC Tournament MVP.

Following his college career, Epkey travelled and played many pro circuit events throughout the United States for about a year. He won a round in the qualifier of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships which hosted the top players in the world. 

After his playing career Epkey moved to Sellersburg, Indiana and began working as a teaching professional.  He was the Assistant coach at Jeffersonville High School under Mark Reilly for three seasons and in 2010 the team made it to the IHSAA state tournament final four.  Epkey was hired as the assistant coach at Bellarmine University for the current school year before accepting the head coaching position at Indiana University Southeast.

Tennis has always been a big part of the family.  Coach Epkey has two brothers, Tony who is now a high school head coach and teaching professional in the Indianapolis area and Jarrod who is the assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State.  Their father John Epkey was the one who started the family in tennis when he became a PTR certified professional back in 1984 and coached all three of his sons as well as many other players to the Division 1 level.  His mother Patty Epkey helped run the Indianapolis Tennis Center and strung racquets at the RCA Championships in Indianapolis. 

Coach Epkey lives in Sellersburg with his wife Maggie, a former member University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team.  They have two boys Conner and Logan and a daughter, Peyton.
