WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The IU Southeast men's basketball team lost its season opener to the University of the Cumberlands 83-64 on Monday night (Nov. 2) on the road in Williamsburg, Ky.
The No. 10-ranked Grenadiers could not hold off the No. 15-ranked (NAIA D-I) Cumberlands in a tough road environment. Both teams played extremely well and matched each other in most statistical categories. Unfortunately for IU Southeast, Cumberlands connected on more shots, outscoring the Grenadiers in both field goal and 3-pt. field goal shooting on the night.
IU Southeast (0-1, 0-0 KIAC) was led by freshman Brice Mitchell (Louisville, Ky. / Male H.S.) who came off the bench and led the Grenadier offensive attack with 16 points. Junior Rick Bodiford (Louisville, Ky. / Eastern H.S.) scored 13 points for the Grenadiers and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Junior Jazz Ferguson (Louisville, Ky. / Moore H.S.) scored 11 points and rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Grenadiers.
The Grenadiers shot 46-percent from field goal range and 29-percent from behind the 3-pt. arc. IU Southeast connected on nine of its 15 free-throw attempts (60-percent) and had 29 of its 64 points come from off the bench.
IU Southeast trailed by five at halftime, 38-33.
The University of the Cumberlands (1-0) was led by Chad Byron with 23 points, six assists and two rebounds. Three other Cumberlands players scored in double-digits combining for 34 points.
Cumberlands shot 51-percent from the field and 47-percent from beyond the arc with 33 of their 83 total points coming off the bench. Cumberlands also won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Grenadiers 26-14 under the basket.
IU Southeast will be back in action this weekend hosting the 3rd Annual Sheraton Riverside Hotel Joe B. and Denny Classic presented by Fazoli's, Norton Healthcare and Coca-Cola beginning on Friday, November 6.
The two-day classic will feature four college basketball teams from the region. Union (Ky.) College and Ivy Tech (Indianapolis) will kick off the classic at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov.6 in the Southeast Activities Building on the IU Southeast campus.
Later on Friday evening at approximately 8 p.m. the Grenadiers will host the Mid-Continent University Cougars in the nightcap home opener for IU Southeast.
Former University of Louisville Men's Basketball Head Coach, Denny Crum plans to be in attendance during part of the first and second games on Friday (Nov. 6) to sign autographs for fans. Former University of Kentucky Head Coach Joe B. Hall will not be in attendance for this year's tournament as he has previously arranged family obligations.
Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and 12:00 noon on Saturday. Ticket prices for the event are $7 for adult general admission and free of charge for children 12 years old or younger. IU Southeast season tickets can also be purchased at the door for $25.
