NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast volleyball team split a doubleheader to open conference play on Friday evening in the Southeast Activities Building.
The Grenadiers (6-7, 1-1 KIAC) defeated Mountain State 3-0 in the first game of the evening. Kristyn Maymon and Jade Troutman led IU Southeast with eight kills. Meaghen Tompkins had 29 assists and Stephanie Bradshaw had 12 digs to lead IU Southeast.
The Grenadiers have won the last four meetings against Mountain State (4-7, 1-2 KIAC) dating back to 2009.
IU Southeast lost their match against the No. 22-ranked IU East Red Wolves 3-0. The Red Wolves (10-1, 1-0 KIAC) started out quickly in the first game of the match before the Grenadiers mounted a comeback but they eventually lost the game 25-23. Fatigue set in for the Grenadiers as they dropped the next two matches 25-13 and 25-14.
Kaitlyn Maymon had a strong match with 13 kills to lead the Grenadiers. Paige Lay led all players with 15 kills for the Red Wolves. Meaghen Tompkins had 20 assists for the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast heads to Berea, Ky. tomorrow to face Berea and Alice Lloyd with the matches beginning at 10 am. The Grenadiers return home Tuesday, September 20 when they face Midway at 7 pm.
