NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The Indiana University Southeast softball program picked up two wins today over Midway College. The Grenadiers defeated the visiting Eagles of Midway College 7-1 in the first game of the conference double header. In the second game of the day, the Grenadiers pulled out a 6-3 victory over Midway.
IU Southeast sophomore Kayla Duke (8-3) earned her eight win of the season to lead the Grenadiers to victory in game one of the double header. Kelsey Everett (6-5), who last week was named KIAC Pitcher of the Week, earned her sixth win of the season in the second game of the day.
Grenadier freshman MiLeah Walker came in to the game late to earn the second-game save. It was Walker's first save of the season.
Fourth year Grenadier Head Coach Todd Buckingham felt a little uneasy coming into today's games, "I felt a little apprehension about today. We don't play a lot of Monday games and coming right off of the Easter holiday with no practice made it even tougher. Midway always plays us tough."
"This team just finds a way to win," said Buckingham. "I am happy to get these two wins. They may have been ugly wins, but they are still wins."
Grenadier senior Tara Denzik, who retuned today after missing the last 10 games due to injury, led the Grenadiers offensively with some impressive swinging.
Coming into today's games, the Grenadier softball program is currently ranked No. 3 in the NAIA for triples per game (15) and ranked No. 9 for most stolen bases per game (2.724). Shana Andres is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA for total triples this season with five. The Grenadiers are combining for a .385 batting average and have outscored opponents 159-72 in 30 games.
"We have added another team motto: We are only as good as what we do tomorrow," said Buckingham. "If our ladies get too caught up in our recent success then we could get in trouble. We just need to focus on what we have to do tomorrow and we will be successful."
The softball Grenadiers are now 20-10 overall on the season and an undefeated 8-0 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC). IU Southeast has earned a 10-2 record at home this season and have won four out of its last five games.
The Grenadiers have a busy Saturday ahead of them. IU Southeast will host Alice Lloyd College for a conference double header on Saturday (4/10) at 11 a.m. The Grenadiers will then turn right around and host Brescia University for a conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
