NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The Indiana University Southeast baseball team is on the verge of possibly breaking history this weekend. Last year, the IU Southeast baseball team broke the university consecutive win streak record at 11 games.
This year's team is currently on a 10 game win streak dating back March 4, 2010. The Grenadiers will have a chance to tie and break the consecutive win mark set last year on Friday afternoon when the team hosts Berea College for a conference (KIAC) doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
The Grenadiers currently sport a 12-7 overall record and are off to their most impressive start in recent history. The Grenadiers are combining for a .295 batting average and have outscored opponents 108-95 in 19 games.
The Grenadier pitching staff has also been impressive in the early part of the season. The staff has struck out 82 batters with a combined team ERA of 5.55 in 19 games. Grenadier pitchers Adam Lipke and Brent Bennett have both thrown two complete games each this season.
Last week, Bennett was named KIAC Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season. Jordan Pass was named KIAC Player of the Week for his outstanding offensive numbers.
Leading the way offensively for the Grenadier nine is Daniel McDonald with a .368 batting average. McDonald has 21 hits, 10 runs and 14 RBIs in 57 at-bats. Kyle Lenn's bat has also been on fire for the Grenadiers. Lenn has hit five of the team's eight homeruns so far this season with a team-high 19 RBIs.
Grenadier Head Coach Ben Reel has the team playing well in his second season at the helm of the program. Reel has an overall record of 45-25 (.616) and has led the program to new heights. The Koetter Sports Baseball Complex has undergone several improvements since last year with Reel spearheading the process.
Improvement include a new warning track, general surface improvements, new fencing and the addition of lights which will be debuted later this season have all been made during the offseason.
The Grenadiers will begin Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) play on Friday when they host Berea College for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. The Grenadiers and the Mountaineers will also play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. All games will be played at the Koetter Sports Baseball Complex on the campus of IU Southeast in New Albany.
