NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast men's basketball team routed Alice Lloyd College 122-80 at home in New Albany, Ind. IU Southeast honored its seven graduating seniors prior to the game for their outstanding contributions as student-athletes during the past four years.
The game started with classy act by Alice Lloyd Head Coach JR Hammond.
Hammond allowed IU Southeast to win the opening tip-off. He then called off his defensive pressure allowing the Grenadiers' Clay Ryan (Louisville, Ky.), whose knee injury a few weeks ended his senior season, to score the opening layup. Grenadier Head Coach Wiley Brown returned the gesture and allowed Alice Lloyd to score an uncontested basket.
Brown then substituted for Ryan who received a standing ovation from Grenadier fans. The game then got underway with a 2-2 score.
Coach Brown, who set up the opening tipoff situation with Coach Hammond wouldn't want it any other way, "Clay has been instrumental part of this team's success. He deserved the spotlight just like all of our other seniors. I'm very happy Coach Hammond agreed to allow this to happen. It was great to see Clay in the box score again."
The No. 3-ranked Grenadiers (NAIA Division II) jumped out of the gate early and dominated throughout much of the contest in a highly emotional game.
