NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team jumped out to big leads in both games of Saturday's doubleheader and did not look back defeating Rio Grande, 13-2 and 7-4.
In game one, the Grenadiers' Zach Reboulet opened the scoring with an RBI doublein the second inning.
IU Southeast (13-6, 8-2 RSC) would add five more in the third inning without recording an extra-base hit. They capitalized on an error and a couple of passed balls to keep the pressure on. Six Grenadiers had six singles in the inning.
The Grenadiers added two runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to blow the game open.
Logan Barnes knocked in three and Julian Flanary, Nicholas Lugo and Zach Reboulet each knocked in a pair in the win. Richard Rodriguez and Lugo each had three hits.
Ryne Underwood got the complete-game win. He gave up two runs, one earned and allowed seven hits while striking out six.
In game two, Brandon Nylin shut down the RedStorm offense early and the Grenadier offense struck early once again.
The Grenadiers scored two runs in the bottom of the first by putting pressure on the Rio Grande defense. A wild pitch by Collin Powers allowed Rodriguez to score and a wild throw by catcher Juston Donnally allowed Lugo to come around.
iU Southeast scored three more runs in the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Lugo and Clay Benefield started the inning. Then Logan Barnes got a bunt down to score Lugo and Barnes reached safely. Tanner Leenknecht reached on another base hit to load the bases. Zach Reboulet drew a bases-loaded walk and Matt Volz hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Jordan Branz.
Nylin worked five innings and gave up a run on six hits while striking out three. Gage Rogers earned his fourth save.
Clay Benefield had three hits and Barnes added two for the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast concludes the series with Rio Grande Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
