NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The iU Southeast baseball team used timely hitting offensively and solid pitching from John Cecil and the back end of the bullpen to defeat No. 15 Lindsey Wilson 8-6 on Thursday afternoon.
The Grenadiers (11-6) struck for five runs on the bottom of the first. Matt Volz led off with a double and Richard Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Nicholas Lugo followed with an infield single to short to load the bases. Clay Benefield followed with a two-run single. Logan Barnes brought in Lugo with a single and then Tanner Leenknecht followed with an two-run double to make it 5-0.
Lindsey Wilson (13-11) would strike back with two runs in the top of the second and the Grenadiers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Cody Maloon got a bunt down on a squeeze to score Rodriguez.
The Blue Raiders roared back to tie the game in the top of the 6th. Connor Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to start the rally. Jayden Jackson, Steven Parades and Vincent Boils kept the rally going with RBI singles to tie the game.
The Grenadiers answered in the bottom of the inning. Richard Rodriguez walked and then stole second. Hector Marmol walked and Lugo knocked in the go-ahead run with a single to left. An RBI groundout to short by Clay Benefield made it 8-6.
Chase Vanek worked a scoreless eighth and Gage Rogers earned his third save of the year by retiring the Blue Raiders in order.
Trever Huth earned the win in relief of John Cecil who suffered a no decision but had a great start. Cecil worked five innings and gave up three runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked two but the bullpen could not hold it for him. Larry Stewart took the loss for Lindsey Wilson.
Clay Benefield went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Hector Marmol and Nicholas Lugo each had two hits for IU Southeast.
IU Southeast hosts conference rival Rio Grande on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is at noon.
