NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team swept Friday's doubleheader against Midway to take three out of four in the series. IU Southeast defeated the Eagles 9-3 and 10-4.
In game one, the Grenadiers opened the scoring with four runs in the first inning. Matt Volz led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored on a fielder's choice. Nicholas Lugo would add an RBI single and Tanner Leenknecht hit a two-run single to make it 4-0.
The Grenadiers (10-6, 6-2 RSC) added two more runs in the second. Richard Rodriguez scored after Logan Barnes drew a bases loaded walk and Lugo scored after a Hector Quinones dropped a fly ball.
Hector Marmol earned his first win as a Grenadier working six innings. He gave up three runs on three hits. He struck out eight and walked six.
Tanner Leenknecht, Nicholas Lugo and Matt Volz each had two hits for the Grenadiers. Leenknecht had four RBI in game one.
In game two, the Grenadiers once again struck early to put the game away. IU Southeast scored six in the first and four in second to put the game out of reach.
Matt Volz and Richard Rodriguez led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back doubles. The big blow came from Leenknecht who hit a three-run double. In the next inning, he came through with another double to bring in two more runs and finished with five RBI in the second game, and nine RBI on the day.
Chase Vanek worked four and two-thirds for the win. He gave up three runs, one earned while striking out three and walking two.
IU Southeast travels to Marian University on March 14.
