NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Six Grenadiers scored in double-figures and IU Southeast shut down a hot Rio Grande offense in the second half to advance to the semifinals of the River States Conference men's basketball tournament on Wednesday.
The first half was full of offensive fireworks as both teams shot better than 58 percent from the field. Rio Grande (13-17) shot 68 percent from the field and went 6-of-7 from behind-the-arc. The game was tied at 47 at halftime.
Will Hill had 19 of his game-high 35 points in the first half and Corey Cruse had 12 of his 21 points in the opening 20 minutes. Jamie Johnson started slowly but had 15 of his 25 points in the first half.
The Grenadiers (23-7) led 35-24 with 5:23 remaining in the first half but a 16-5 run by Rio Grande tied the game.
In the second half, IU Southeast clamped down defensively. The Grenadiers (23-7) held Rio Grande to 7-of-28 shooting from the field and only allowed one three-point field goal in the second half.
IU Southeast led 60-56 with 13 minutes to play and then used a 20-7 run to put the game out of reach.
Jamie Johnson led the Grenadiers with 25 points, Robert Sawyer had 14 points and seven rebounds, Demetrius Stanton had 14 points, Devon White added 12 points and Joe Ferree and Joe Jackson each had 11 points.
Will Hill had a stellar evening for the RedStorm, scoring 35 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Corey Cruse had 21 points.
The Grenadiers host No. 20 West Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. Saturday in an RSC semifinal.
