KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The IU Southeast men's basketball program moves up one spot this week to earn the No. 4 ranking in the 2009-10 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll, announced Monday by the NAIA national office. The Grenadiers are 17-3 overall and 6-0 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC). This week's ranking is the highest NAIA national ranking ever achieved by an athletic team in IU Southeast school history.
Oklahoma Wesleyan earned the No. 1 ranking for the 11th straight NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll. In the sixth edition of the Top 25, Oklahoma Wesleyan grabbed all of the 16 first-place votes and is 20-0 this year.
The Eagles are the only undefeated team in Division II after going 3-0 last week. Leading the country in 3-pointer's made (13.4 pg), the Eagles have connected on at least 10 treys in each game this year.
The Eagles, who own an NAIA-record 38-game winning streak, faces the last team to hand them a loss, College of the Ozarks (Mo.). Both teams face each other on Jan. 26 from Bartlesville, Okla. Ozarks dropped Oklahoma Wesleyan, 87-76 back on Jan. 20, 2009 prior to the lengthy winning streak. Oklahoma Wesleyan is 10-0 this year at home and has won by an average of 23.7 points.
Walsh (Ohio) again sits at No. 2 this week with 422 total points. With a 19-1 record, the Cavs have won nine straight since their only loss against then-No. 20 St. Francis (Ind.) on Dec. 18. During the current winning streak, Walsh has won by an average of over 36 points. Walsh heads to No. 22
Cedarville (Ohio) on Jan. 26 for a battle in the America Mideast Conference South Division.
Holding at No. 3 is Oregon Tech with 405 total points. The Hustlin' Owls, who have won nine in-a-row, have held the third spot for two straight weeks. At 20-3, Oregon Tech takes on two road opponents this weekend in conference play.
No. 4
Indiana University Southeast is back in the poll after sitting out last week. The Grenadiers are 17-3 on the year and gathered 372 total points. Leading the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 6-0, IU Southeast has a single league game against Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Jan. 30. IU Southeast has won nine straight games and is 17-0 against NAIA Division II competition with the three setbacks coming against NAIA Division I and NCAA teams.
Representing the Cascade Collegiate Conference, No. 5 Warner Pacific (Ore.) checks in with 370 total points this week. The Knights are 16-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference. They face No. 24 Eastern Oregon on Jan. 29 before taking on College of Idaho the following day.
The Mid-Central College Conference (MCCC) and Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) each place four teams in the Top 25 - from the MCCC, No. 6 Saint Francis (Ind.), No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan, No. 9 Bethel (Ind.) and No. 23 Spring Arbor (Mich.). The CCC has No. 3 Oregon Tech, No. 5 Warner Pacific (Ore.), No. 20 Evergreen State (Wash.) and No. 24 Eastern Oregon.
Two teams enter the Top 25 after sitting out the last time: No. 4 Indiana -Southeast and No. 20 Evergreen State. Indiana-Southeast was rated the first six polls (including preseason) while ESC last was ranked during the Preseason Top 25 at the No. 22 position.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The seventh regular season Top 25 poll will be announced on Monday, Feb. 1.
