KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The IU Southeast Women's Basketball program finds itself just outside the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, which was released Monday by the NAIA national office. The Grenadiers received eight votes for the weekly top 25 poll. The IU Southeast women's basketball program is currently 14-7 overall and 7-0 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC).
No. 1 Davenport (Mich.) and No. 2 Hastings (Neb.) held steady as the nation's top-two teams, but the rest of the top five and 12 other teams shuffled rank in the sixth edition of NAIA Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
Davenport captured 14 first-place votes and Hastings was awarded two first-place nods to spend a fourth consecutive week ranked first and second. Cedarville (Ohio) moves to third, followed by No. 4 Briar Cliff (Iowa) and No. 5 Northwestern (Iowa).
Three teams exchange rank this week, with the appearance of No. 20 Walsh (Ohio), No. 23 Huntington (Ind.) and No. 25 Milligan (Tenn.). The trio replaces Bethel (Ind.), Dickinson State (N.D.) and Mount Marty (S.D.). All three teams are making their first appearance among the Top 25 after receiving votes in five of six previous polls this season and in the preseason poll.
With Mount Marty dropping out of the Top 25, the Great Plains Athletic Conference is now represented by four schools: Hastings, Briar Cliff, Northwestern and No. 13 Morningside (Iowa). The Mid-Central College Conference also boasts four ranked squads: No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan, No. 14 Saint Francis (Ind.) Huntington and No. 24 Marian (Ind.).
Davenport (21-1, 7-0 WHAC) won by an average of 43 points in a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference games last week to continue its 21-game winning streak. The nation's top-scoring offense (90.7) set the school record for points scored in a game with a 120-87 victory over Indiana Tech on Jan. 23. It was the sixth time this season that the Lady Panthers have eclipsed the century mark. Davenport has just one game scheduled this week, traveling to Cornerstone (Mich.) on Wednesday.
Second-ranked Hastings has won 16-straight games, including an 83-61 win over Nebraska Wesleyan last week in GPAC action. Armed with a 20-2 overall record and a perfect 10-0 mark in the league, the Broncos are at the top of the conference standings. Hastings currently leads the country in precision from 3-point land, connecting on 42.8 percent of its shots. This week the Broncos will play host to Midland Lutheran (Neb.) on Wednesday, followed by a collision with No. 13 Morningside (Iowa) on Saturday.
Cedarville improves one spot from last week to No. 3 following a pair of American Mideast Conference road wins. The Lady Jackets cruised past Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio), 69-58, and Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.), 76-64, to improve to 8-1 in the league. Cedarville is still in second place in the standings behind 9-1 Walsh (Ohio). The Lady Jackets will look to extend their nine-game winning streak on Saturday by traveling to Point Park (Pa.).
Briar Cliff moves into the top five at No. 4 for the first time this season after upending then-No. 3 Northwestern (Iowa) 85-75 on Jan. 20. The Chargers were led by Liz Grider's 40-point performance. Briar Cliff followed up with its sixth-straight win with a 77-52 thumping of Concordia (Neb.) to boost its record to 19-3, 8-2 GPAC. Two conference games are slated this week with Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at home on Wednesday, followed by a trip to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday.
After suffering a 10-point loss to then-No. 7 Briar Cliff on Jan. 20, Northwestern (18-3, 9-2) falls two spots this week to No. 5. It was the third defeat of the season for the Red Raiders, with two of those losses coming in GPAC play. The Red Raiders were able to rebound from the loss by toppling Midland Lutheran (Neb.) 90-74 on Jan. 23. With a 9-2 league record, Northwestern is in second place in the conference race. A Saturday meeting with Dordt (Iowa) is the lone contest on the schedule this week.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences. The next poll will be announced on Feb. 1.
