Name: Alisha Michelle Briner

Hometown: Mitchell, IN
Major: Elementary Education
Plans for the future?
I hope to teach in a local kindergarten in a first or second grade classroom. I would love to coach a high school girls basketball team but not until I have at least a few years of just teaching under my belt.
Why did you choose to go to IU Southeast?
I choose IU Southeast mainly because of basketball. I had never heard of the school until Coach Farris came to one of my games in high school. After a school visit and seeing the sizes of the classes I was hooked because I knew I wasn't just going to be another number to some professor.
What has been your favorite memory from college?
The friendships that I've made with my classmates as well finding out what I'm really made of when it comes to getting things done in the classroom has been some of my favorite memories. The most rewarding part of being here at IU Southeast has been doing my observations with the kids I've had.
What has been your favorite memory from your career as an athlete?
Junior year (last year) we went 11-0 in the KIAC and won the KIAC tournament as well. We went to the NAIA National tournament in Iowa which wasn't a fun 16 hour bus trip but it was an experience of a lifetime that I would love for the new girls on the team to get the chance to see. We learned a lot about each other being stuck in a hotel for a week together. HA!
What drives you as an athlete?
The fact that I'm not just playing for myself but for the girls on my team and the school really drives me as an athlete. Like most athletes, there's always somebody out there who doubts you as an athlete and I myself had coach after coach tell me I'd never go anywhere in sports until my high school coach had faith in me to help me prove them wrong and that still drives me and always will.
What is a talent outside of your sport that you posses?
Well I used to play the flute when I was in high school and I kind of still can.
What is something very few people know about you?
I'm deaf in my right ear which makes basketball as well as teaching that much harder for me.
