NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast women's basketball defeated Berea College 71-57 on Tuesday night (Jan. 12) in the Southeast Activities Building.
With the win, the IU Southeast women's program remains undefeated in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) with five conference wins.
IU Southeast (11-7, 5-0 KIAC) was led by Whitney Duncan (Louisville, Ky.) and Ashmere Woods (Louisville, Ky.) who each scored15 points to lead the offensive attack of the Grenadiers. Duncan also cashed in eight assists with five steals and three rebounds. Woods pulled down six rebounds with four assists and two steals for IU Southeast.
Alden Krausse (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) scored 10 points for Grenadiers. Krausse also earned a game-high six blocks.
The Grenadiers shot 44-percent from field goal range and 31-percent from behind the 3-pt. arc. IU Southeast led over the visiting Mountaineers of Berea by 16 points at halftime, 33-17. The Mountaineers out-scored the Grenadiers 40-38 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to close the deficit from the first half; the Grenadiers rolled to a 14 point victory.
IU Southeast combined for a total of 14 steals with nine blocks defensively, forcing the Mountaineers into committing 23 total turnovers. The Grenadiers were 12-of-20 from the free throw line for 60-percent.
Berea (2-14 / 0-1 KIAC) was led by Annbruce Madden, who had a strong night with a game-high 21 points and four rebounds. IU Southeast out-rebounded Berea 41-38. Heather Hutchins added 11 points and three rebounds for the visiting Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers shot 32-percent from the field and 42-percent from 3-pt. range during the game. Defensively, Berea forced IU Southeast into 18 turnovers with eight total steals and four blocks.
Berea was 16-of-23 from the line for 69-percent.
IU Southeast will be back in action on Thursday night (Jan. 14) when the team hosts St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (5-7) at 7:30 p.m. The game against St. Mary-of-the-Woods was originally scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed until Jan. 14 due to inclement winter weather.
Doors will open at6:30 p.m. on Jan. 14.Tickets for the event are $7 for adult general admission and free of charge for children 12 years old or younger. IU Southeast season tickets can also be purchased at the door for $25.
